Brief History of Rotary

Rotary was founded on February 23, 1905, in Chicago, Illinois, USA, by Paul Harris, a lawyer who wanted to recreate the friendly spirit of hometown life in the big city. He gathered a group of professionals to form a club where members could exchange ideas, form meaningful friendships, and give back to their communities. They called it “Rotary” because the meeting locations rotated among members’ offices.

From those humble beginnings, Rotary has grown into one of the world’s largest and most respected humanitarian service organizations. Today, Rotary International has over 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs across 200+ countries and regions, united by a shared commitment to “Service Above Self.”

Rotary’s efforts have helped improve health, fight disease (including its global Polio Eradication Initiative), promote peace, support education, grow local economies, and protect the environment. With over a century of impactful service, Rotary continues to bring people together to create lasting change — locally and globally.

We are a dynamic local chapter dedicated to humanitarian service, peace, and development in Ikate and Surulere in Lagos Nigeria, uplifting our community through action.
